history
At São Pedro fair, it is customary to hold the traditional “Feira dos Pucarinhos” in Vila Real where all the artisans of the county concentrate in the heart of the city and exhibit their art.
The “Feira dos Pucarinhos” has always been a time of tradition for black clay potters (Barro de Bisalhães) and for the linen weavers of Agarez who brought their work to the city centre to proudly and satisfactorily display the pieces they created .
From generation to generation, knowledge was transmitted through clay, the art of molding, baking and shaping it, which are today a landmark in the locality and crafts of Vila Real.
Nowadays, pottery is an art that is little valued and developed, making the fair not as representative as it used to be.
Barro Preto de Bisalhães is an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2016.
Curiosity:
The oldest record of a Bisalhães potter is from 1709, when a woman from Bisalhães and a potter from Gondar were married.
